Rock Trivia, At Long Last

Rock Trivia

Thanks to the perseverance of Peggy Dold, tonight some of the finest minds in music trivia gathered at Topspin’s Santa Monica office to play a board game from 1983: Rock Trivia. I had this game when I was a kid * (I was born in 1972) and found it almost as hard today as it was when I was 11. The field was tough and included Scott Bauman, Dave DiMartino, Alan Elliott, Jeff Jampol, Bob Lefsetz, and Michael Rosenblatt. Brad Barrish and I held down the low end, not really contenders but they were nice to humor us. We played two rounds and since the teams changed mid-stream there were no clear “winners” though being honest Lefsetz was on both winning teams and I was on both losing teams so you decide who makes the swing. Bauman and DiMartino both knew some very scary shit but Jampol and Rosenblatt hold their own. Alan cursed the overpowering caucasianess of the game but pulled out the final question so he went home happy. Brad and I were just glad to be there.

To memorialize the night I leave you with this playlist of songs referenced by the questions in tonight’s game. Should give you a good sampler of the triviality within. Come on. It’s not a bad playlist.

We hope to do this again. I’m thinking of a tournament of sorts. If you know anyone we *must* add please hit us up and let us know.

Thanks to Alan, Jeff, Scott, Bob, Dave, Michael, and Brad for indulging me. Thanks Peggy for putting it together. Chris Morris — next time dammit. I’ll pick you up.

* Note: I had my original Rock Trivia game until the late 90s, when I gifted it to Bob Mack. I bought another copy on eBay a few years back.

What a pleasure and an honor to be a teeny part of this. It was a true delight to be in such great, amazing company. I had to occasionally pinch myself as I am humbled by how fortunate I have been to work in music, in one way or another, my entire life, and to get to know some of you years ago, and some of you, for the first time, tonight. THANK YOU IAN for making it such a magical evening! Chris Morris — if Ian doesn’t pick you up, I will!

Sweet Ian! Two of my loves in life rolled into one nifty game. If you were on the losing teams, I’m guessing I may struggle, but would enjoy the challenge if the opportunity arises! Hope you’re well.
